Situation one:You are grouped with the main-stream. When you tell people you have a learning difference they often don't believe you. They group you together with the main stream. It sucks when you are trying to get services or help that you need and no one believes you. For example: When I tried to apply for SSI I have been turned down four times because I look and act "normal". So they assume I am lying and just trying to get free money.
Situation 2: You are grouped together with the lower functioning crowed. I have had this happen all my life. When I tell people I am on the autisum spectrum. They seem to totally ignore the spectrum part of the sentence and treat me like I have regular autisum. Example: In high school I was put with an Aide who in math class would insist on giving me the answers to all my math problems. She didn't help me with the actual steps for doing the problem which automatically led to me failing most of the tests and quizzes since she wasn't allowed to help me. I failed the whole class.
When people try to help me I will tell them point-blank what it is I need help with. There are no secrets. It really pisses me off when people try to help me in areas where I don't need help. I really wish that they would just listen to me.
Natalie, I wanna hear more! Update please. :(
